What's good?

Had a chance to sit down with Nick Carparelli this week?
Know him?
He's the Big East's associate commissioner for football.

I'm going to drop some tidbits from our interview here now, particularly the ones that address the discussions we've been having around here lately about the bowl lineup but the session was really part of a bigger football story that's coming.

Anyway, I asked Nick what was the latest. He said he and other league officials are working feverishly to get something done well before the current bowl cycle ends this year.

"Our goal is this spring," Carparelli said. "We'd like to get it done then. We're working hard on it but we're not going to rush just to get something done. If it takes us longer, a lot longer to get in the best possible situation we can then that's what we'll do. But the plan we're following is: destination, geography and obviously, to get in games to play as many BCS opponents as possible."Carparelli said the league would like to keep its affiliations with the Gator Bowl (obviously as its No.2 game, but guaranteed all four years with the option of selecting Notre Dame during one of them), Sun Bowl, Meineke Car Care, St. Petersburg and Toronto, for sure.

Carparelli said the league does, in fact, have interest in the Champs, Liberty and Music City Bowls, too. And, there are obviously healthy discussions with EagleBank Bowl folks in Washington.

Bottom line, Carparelli the league is looking to establish relationships with everybody to see what they can pull off.

- He also said league officials were excited when the possibility of a domed stadium coming to New York, was well, a possibility. Since that option is out, so is the possibility of the Big East trying to have it own bowl game in the East - not without cover.

All of which means he's putting out a ton of feelers, and there've been no bites yet. But he's putting a positive spin on everything to keep people off his back for now...
I do find it interesting that this is all coming out now surround the BE Campionship weekend. I think this a fun time. And the bowl situation could get much improved. I like the idea of keeping the Gator our 2nd and having the Sun as our 3rd against the PAC 10. I think this idea isn't that far fetched at all. I just think this an attempt to keep the football side happy for now. This summer is going to be real interesting for the football schools I must say.
Doesn't sound like much of an update

That's the way it struck me, too.

Looking at the bowls mentioned ... why would we want affiliation with the "eaglebank" bowl? That's right down there with the St Pete Bowl and New Orelans Bowl as a bottom-feeder. It would cost more money to attend than the payout, and the TV explosure will be neglible.

As for the others .. we're not going to dislodge the SEC from the Music City and the Liberty Bowls (the idea of dislodging the SEC from bowls in SEC states that aren't Big East states is laughable), nor the Big 10 from the Champs (everyone wants the Big 10 because of their traveling fans), and we're not going to dislodge C-USA from the Liberty either, not as long as Memphis is in C-USA.

So that really means trying to oust the ACC from either or both of the Champs sports or Music City bowls. Champs is unlikely, because as much as i hate to admit it, FSU is still a lot bigger name in Florida than USF is, so they'd rather have that connection.

Which leaves the Music City Bowl. That Bowl seems to be a possibility, since it is more a part of our footprint than the ACC's. But, (a) the MC bowl already booted the Big East out, back in 2001 or so, and (b) they get a pretty good selection from the ACC already. IIRC, this past year they got BC, who was the ACC runner-up.

So i don't that's too likely, either.
I don't see sun getting any more invloved than they were (although they love ND). Don't know how interested liberty/sec is in ND. If they could upgrade pizza payout to move up a spot in sec, possibly could try liberty 2 of 4 BE/ND pushing cusa to pizza 2 of 4. I think best can hope for is

bcs
gator (back to 3 of 4)
muffler
pizza (increased payout for better chance at sec)
toronto
st pete
possibly something partial with sun or liberty
BCS or bust... 04-rock

You guys can fight it out for the lesser bowls...

Pardon the interruption, but why didn't you asked him if he felt that the football conference members were concerned about moving the conference's established deadline for a notification of a split back or dissolving it all together?

Inquiring minds would love to know (LOL) ...

It pays more than the Pizza Bowl. Pizza $300,000 - Congressional $1,000,000.

Also, that bowl is in the center of the BE geographically. Easy access from Rutgers, UConn, Cuse, Pitt, and WV. Cinn, L'ville, and USF have a bit of a drive or flight though. I'd take this bowl over that cheap Pizza bowl any day. Rutgers lost money going down there last year for that pitiful payout. 04-jawdrop 03-nutkick 05-stirthepot 04-cheers

no need to ask.. nothing is being done.. exit rule will simply go away in 2010. BE is what it is and will remain in the near future.

You'll figure out Jarrett Brown is pretty good. Also, don't forget Coley White, Pat's little brother, is WVU's backup QB... 05-stirthepot
If either was better than Pat White then they would have started last year.

Im not saying neither one of them will be good but it will take a lot to replace Pat White that was a very good leader and QB. He rarely made mistakes and could hurt you passing and running.

We wil find out come September.

The Liberty Bowl didn't dump Memphis and C-USA for the SEC. They certainly won't do it for the Big East. The only way the Big East will sniff the Liberty Bowl is to invite Memphis.

The problem is we have seen Jarrett Brown and he is no Pat White although he is good. Coley White is whole another story.
