Ex-Godby player's contributions worth the journey he took
By Ben Jacobs

Brandon Reichert grew up watching the Florida State baseball team and hoping to don a Seminole uniform some day.

It took the former Godby player a long time, but after stops at Tallahassee Community College and Mercer and a year of sitting out after transferring, Reichert is finally getting his wish.

"I can remember when I was in Little League, running out and listening to the national anthem standing next to Doug Mientkiewicz," Reichert said. "I remember growing up and looking at those guys as my heroes. To be on the field in the same spot that those guys stood, it's an honor."

Reichert received his own honor after making his biggest offensive contribution of the season last weekend against North Carolina State. The first baseman went 7 for 12 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs, and was named the ACC player of the week.

"Brandon's been a very big addition to our club all year long," head coach Mike Martin said. "What he did over the weekend is just not something that we expect, but yet we know is possible for him to do every time he goes out there."

Despite going 0 for 4 in Tuesday's win over Jacksonville, Reichert is hitting .357 with 29 runs scored and 28 RBIs. Reichert has batted ninth in the lineup all season, but that says more about Florida State's depth than Reichert's ability.

"It's an honor to even be in this lineup," Reichert said. "It's such a good lineup, and I would hate to be the opposing pitcher facing this lineup because it seems like there's no holes in it."

As good as Reichert has been at the plate and in the field, his contributions in the clubhouse have caught Martin's attention more than anything. Leadership was Martin's main concern last season, and Reichert is one of the players who have made sure it hasn't been an issue this year.

"There's no doubt that this team is a team," Martin said. "It's very important that we have good chemistry, good camaraderie, and Brandon plays a major role in that."
