The Rockets nickname came in 1923. While playing against Carnegie Tech, at the time a very good football team, a Pittsburgh sports writer asked a student to come up with a nickname for Toledo since we did not have one at the time. The student came up with Skyrockets, which was shortened to Rockets by the writer. The name has sticked ever since.
